Augmentin is a drug that is given to people having bacterial infections on middle ear and throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, laryngitis and pneumonia. A pencilin antibiotic, Augmentin is also advised for skin infections, urinary tract infections and gonorrhea.

Another thing that has to be taken note of is that Augmentin should not be used by patients who are allergic to clavulanate potassium, amoxicillin and other penicillin medications. Augmentin is not given to breast feeding women as the drug is traced in the milk. The drug that is traced in the breast milk could be harmful to the infant. In case a person is using birth control pills, then it is better to discard them and go for other birth control methods while using Augmentin. This is because the birth control pills loss their effect when combined with Augmentin medicine.

Now talking of the side effects often seen with Augmentin, they are not that serious. In some persons, allergic reactions like swelling (face, tongue, lips), hives and breathing problems have been noticed. The other serious side effects include skin rashes, diarrhea, slight fever, yellowed skin, weakness, dark urine, easy bruising, severe tingling, muscle weakness, numbness, agitation, unusual thoughts, seizure, nausea, stomach ache, appetite loss, clay-colored stools and sore throat. In case a person taking Augmentin experience any of these, then the drug has to be stopped and medical advice sought. The lesser known Augmentin side effects include mild diarrhea, headache, stomach pain, gas, vomiting, itching, gas, rashes, white patches in mouth/throat and vaginal itching and discharge.
